The people who do use desktop saving are advanced users and can easily
disable font-lock themselves. :) But I agree that a even 5-second
wait is annoying, despite the benefits that font-lock brings.
OK, would one of these alternatives work?
1) always using lazy-lock, or
2) using vanilla font-lock on most files but lazy-lock on large files, or
3) merging some code from GNU Emacs
FWIW, Emacs uses jit-lock by default.
