Well, I've got access to purify --- can I just configure --with-purify
and then run it? I don't use the gutters, but I'd be glad to try them

Hmmn, interesting - so you don't use buffer tabs or the graphical progress
gauge?
I think --with-purify is about it, but you might want to check the docs.
You then do something like make puremacs in src
