Please post config.log (the whole thing, since IIRC sometimes it
executes many tests before actually trying the link that causes this

It often has something to do with X libraries, but that's just a wild
guess.
Also, do you have all the relevant -dev packages installed? The
distros have a habit of not including pieces that are necessary to
development to save space. In particular, I think with the
disaggregated X distribution, they often omit even libraries that
contain things like the basic bitmaps for stippling backgrounds and
the like (since there are now "better" ways of doing those things, or
because they're not used in "modern" toolkits, specifically GTK+ and
Qt).
By the way, if your intent is to try out the Xft feature, you need to
add '--with-xft=emacs' to the configure line, and you probably don't
want either '--with-xfs' (--with-xft=emacs,menubars will look better)
or '--with-xim' (which is a deprecated input method mostly used by
kanji-using scripts).
