And to follow through on this minor point ...

In this case you might not easily use the excellent x-symbol package
for
LaTeX. :'(
Well, I have no intention of switching away from XEmacs to GNU Emacs.
I was in on XEmacs when it was Lucid and being updated every couple of
days and I had to recompile it from source about that often.
I'm also a user of TeX and LaTeX since my Amiga days when I helped
beta test AmigaTeX for Tomas Rokicki.
But in the last six or eight years I've gone from hard core software
tester (and sometime Web app developer) and open source advocate to a
user, and my skills and knowledge have degenerated somewhat. I no
longer tinker with either XEmacs or TeX/LaTeX. I just use them (in the
case of XEmacs all day every day, in the case of LaTeX rarely, but
when I need it). And when something breaks when I haven't changed
anything myself, I find I need to start digging around and asking
questions.
This email list is extremely useful to me. I always get great answers
to my questions, even if my questions seem naive at times.
For which I sincerely thank you all.
