Hm. I don't see -fPIC anywhere. Configure was supposed to figure out
that you need that and add it. If you manually add -fPIC to CFLAGS,
does that help?
I'm going out of town in about 15 minutes, and will be gone until
Saturday night, so this will be my last suggestion for a couple of
