gcc 2.96 has caused problems before. (Doesn't that "-85" make your
skin crawl?) I would recommend using a different version if you can
as a workaround.
Also, some versions of GNU ld are known to scramble the executable
(with -z combreloc) although it's not documented in ld --help. Try
building with either the --pdump option and/or the
--ld-flags='-z nocombreloc' option to configure.
Please let me know what version of GNU ld you are using (ld
--version).
