... I don't have plans personally to work on the tabs, and AFAIK this
is the first report of this problem. If Andy Piper, the creator of
the tabs, has time, maybe he'll fix it. I won't guarantee it will get
in to the 21.4 series, though.

I don't think so. Strictly speaking they are not part of a buffer,
and so cannot have keys (or mouse buttons) bound to them in normal
Emacs ways. It should be possible to enhance them in this way but
such enhancements would require substantial surgery to the widget
library, and would be complex because of the way its implmented.
Surely not for 21.4.
