that somebody had already done the work to get this done right, but

I've looked at this a little more closely and the problem appears to
be a difference of opinion between a fairly old X server and a
cutting-edge X client library. If I reverse the direction of the
connection, then everything appears to work for me.
I suppose that upgrading to OpenSSH 3 is not a viable option?
