Seems like something triggers it. It doesn't happen in a newly started
XEmacs. Some sort of interaction with the kill-ring also as that sometimes
seems to be the text thats searched for.

Let's go the standard debugging route. Does it misbehave the same way
when you invoke `xemacs -vanilla'? How about a clean XEmacs build
fresh from the tarball?
In the brave world of CVS and multiple workspaces it's easy to get
stranded with a broken version of <whatever>.
