OK, I've tried this, and it still fails.
I think it has been broken quite recently, because I'm fairly

I've built and ran successfully with the vanilla source this year.
Yes, it was very recent. The incorrect unexec was always there, but
it used to fortuitously work.
I noticed that one of the patches is to `configure.in', which will
mean that if you just apply the patch, you will not get the change
that you need, which is to `configure'. Make sure that you are
linking in unexelfsgi.o, and not unexelf.o.
