This going to be a sad story. Many lisp packages already adhere to xbms,
so this would delay migration of these packages to NT. Maybe if Steve
allowed a special break-in for this feature through the current freeze,
Andy could do this?
I can do it - but I also remember the grief when xpm got generalised.
Steve's call. It will touch console.h, glyphs.c, glyphs.h, glyphs-msw.c and
glyphs-x.c.
