FWIW, I have used --with-mule on all of my systems (OSX, Linux, and
Solaris/sparc) for years now without problems.
I've used xft too for the last few years without problems once I located and
installed all the necessary libraries

Where is --with-pdump NOT the default these days? (I can answer that
for myself if you don't have time, of course.)
I thought it was already default on almost all systems since we fixed
the dumpfile-in-build issue on Windows.
--with-mule is a good suggestion, at least as an experiment.
