Talk to Mike, the stat guy. The main slowdown is in finding the
packages which cost a lot of stats.
The number of stats we do is pretty much minimal. Actually, an "xemacs
-q" comes up plenty fast for me. Like many others, `font-lock' and the
more-than--linear time it takes to construct Gnus summary buffers bother
me most.
