However, if I replace the \n with \r, I do get
"ab\\|[^Mcd]"
in XEmacs 21.5.b16
In Emacs 21.5.50.1 with \n I get
"ab\\|[
cd]"
And in XEmacs for a great while the quoted-insert command inserts a newline
in the document, but I was sure it used to insert it but not break the
display line (i.e. ^J).  That would have been years ago.
