I've tried with and without file-coding, and have upgraded zlib and
libpng to the latest virgins. This is the same crash I reported
previously. The gdb output and the lisp trace are from two separate
runs. I don't know if it crashes in the same place. (Is there a way
to get gdb not to lose that info, so it ends up in the typescript I
make with the `script' command? That way I could show the lisp trace
and the where from the same run.)
To reproduce this, I use the customize menu to customize the default
face. (I'm trying to set up a dark background, for battery savings
on this laptop.) The graphical buttons still have stripes through
them, even with the newest libpng, which makes xemacs able to
correctly display the sample png file in the libpng source package.
I can let someone log in through my workstation to debug, but I don't
think it will do it unless it's displayed on the LCD panel. The copy
of XEmacs in my workstation, compiled from the same source, works.
While I was trying to crash it for the lisp trace, the customize
buffer suddenly filled up with garbage. It happened right when I
pushed enter over "Foreground" to set the text color. Here's a
picture of it...

with gimp, (xv doesn't do good screenshots on this thing for some
reason. They turn out as a blue striped blank.) more garbage filled
the screen. Eventually, it crashed.
I just did the following test: I used slogin to log into the desktop
workstation over the lan, from this laptop. I ran XEmacs there, and
found that the .png backdrop I use has vertical stripes through it on
this display. It works perfectly on the other box, at 16bpp. Here's
a picture of what it looks like displayed here, across the lan.

This time, when I selected customize face, it did the garbage thing
right away, and crashed promptly after I typed "default" and pressed
enter. The final typescript is that session. This crash does not
happen in the same binary when its display is on the desktop box,
using a 16bpp display. I don't know if it's the color depth, but
suspect it, because of the other display problems.
