Problems with SuperCite

I just upgraded from XEmacs 21.1 to 21.4 and decided to revisit my init.el since it's gotton quite dusty. I have had a longstanding problem with supercite hanging on certain citations and the problem still exists with 21.4. I traced the problem to sc-auto-fill-region-p with a value of 't' to auto-fill the citation. It will not always fail with 't' but will always work with 'nil'. In a case where it would fail, an explicit fill-paragraph (using filladapt) will fail too. It appears that the problem might be only with text that also contains a signature in the body to be cited. HAs anyone else seen anything like this? Can anyone shed any light on this or point me in a useful direction?
