I don't know if this is relevant for the discussion at hand, but in
Emacs 22 (CVS, before 22.1), the conversion dotless-i<->I caused real
problems in Gnus because of for "X-Gnus-Article-Number" (because of
the *i* therein) in (nnfolder/) mbox files.
