You'll have to be a bit more specific:
Gnus works fine for me in that setting. Moreover, VM has traditionally
been doing its own window-configuration management.
Gnus has some glitches but I haven't used it in a while. Recent VM
fairly well in 21.4 and 21.5.26, but it's abominable in HEAD. The
cursor position consistently gets reset to a message I viewed last in
2007, on return from message mode I'll typically see the wrong summary
buffer, the cursor and VM's idea of the current message are almost
never in sync, etc.
You can say it's VM's fault for using low-level internal facilities,
but then I riposte that it's RMS's fault for being such a flasher,
exposing his internals everywhere. There just aren't any internals in
Emacs, everything's part of the API.
