I rebuilt, but hadn't updated (doh!).
problem is definitely there, as well as other cursor movement
strangeness:
o when opening a VM folder I'm at the 1st msg instead of the last
o n and p in a VM summary will move one msg, but cursor is left at the
previous msg, and subsequent n and p do nothing
o C-t in VM folder to toggle-threading leaves previous msg selected,
but moves cursor to 1st msg
probably all symptoms of the same bug...

and just for the record, yes, at least Andy's example does happen with
-vanilla...
