I just did the customization in 21.4 and got
'(column-number-mode t)
Bleeding edge GNU Emacs bleedage, maybe?
I can't get custom to write the above again, with any emacs.
Sigh... OK, never mind. FWIW, several variables was affected. All of
them seemed to be core variables.
