Not that I have the answer, but I have a very similar system: which

executable built with 2.8.1 (from the ports collection) seems to be OK...
Strange.
I've test both gcc 2.7.2.1 and egcs-1.0.3 with no problem, on FreeBSD
2.2.7.
The situation is xemacs 21.0.57 tar balls plus patches(57-60),
xemacs-mule-sumo-1998-12-09.tar.gz and xemacs-sumo-1998-12-09.tar.gz.
The compiler gcc 2.7.2.1 is, of course, FreeBSD bundled.
Could you test with '--error-checking=none'?
