Hooking into the event loop?

Hi all, Is there any way to hook into the event loop? Either with lisp code, or C. I have some things I'd like to do, but doing it well requires some way to add stuff into the event loop, and it's not exactly documented how it works (at least in the 21.4 codebase). If anyone is aware of significant changes in event handling between 21.4 and 21.5, I'd also like to know. If there is no way to do it, does anyone know what's involved to add such hooks?
