Okay, I tried this on a different machine with a fresh install of
Progeny Debian (woody-based) configured for athena=3d. This gives me
the actual athena3d widgets, and I can't make it crash (Installation
attached).

The neXtaw crash:

Compiling in support for the Athena widget set:
- Athena headers location: X11/Xaw3d
- Athena library to link: neXtaw
This should have generated a configure warning about potentially
mismatched header/library structure sizes.
Are the headers in X11/Xaw3D suitable for compiling neXtaw support?
If not, that may be the source of the crash. It would also explain why
the run-time detection fails to catch it, since that only looks for a 3D
symbol when built against non-3D headers.
