Turn off the progress bar with (setq progress-feedback-use-echo-area t).

I don't know what is going on here yet, but any attempt to
instantiate
that thing with recent revisions of Xt (Xaw or Xaw3d doesn't seem to
matter, so I conclude it's deeper in Xt or maybe even X) seems to
trash the class record for the Label widget (at least).
