It could be right. Someone would have to check the code that does the
parsing in hyper-apropros to find out. Me, I'm taking two aspirin and
going to bed. Call me in the morning. :-)

I'll take a look at the hyper-apropos code, though possibly not today.
However, it's strange that you don't observe this anywhere
else, and
nobody else does, if that's the problem. The issue of defcustoms not
corresponding exactly to old-style starred "user variables" is not
unique to Gnus.
I'll look into this angle, too. It may be that the problem exists in
other packages and just hasn't been noticed yet.
FWIW, doing "M-x apropos RET gnus.*group RET" in Emacs 23.3 shows some
variables that have a docstring starting with "*" and some that don't.
hyper-apropos doesn't appear to be bundled with Emacs.
