Hm, I took Jan's advice and removed the var from tex-site.el (sorry, Jan, if I read you wrong). After seeing this error myself and re-reading the AucTeX INSTALL file I now realise that this approach was wrong. I think the correct thing to do is to put the defvar back into tex-site.el and set it to the same as the default setting for it in tex.el. I'll roll another AuxTex package later today after Adrian finishes with the CVS repositories.
