The syntax tables are a no-brainer IMO. Barry Warsaw personally
asked me to do something about the parens in column 1 equals defun
fiasco, and we know what Matt's stuff means to cperl-mode.
Does it mean that Matt's code fixes the parens-in-first-column
problem?
Is there anyone who even knows how we came by that problem and why FSF
Emacs apparently doesn't suffer from it? I understand that it is an
important optimization, but I don't understand why the FSF doesn't
need it!
