Turns out I can reproduce it too, now I’m back on my Mac, and I can make it
go away by removing all XRDB settings that XEmacs is capable of picking up
fonts from. Basically XRDB font settings always override Custom.
I remember coming across this and thinking something was awry back at the
time of http://mid.gmane.org/17741.4702.584611.225633＠parhasard.net ; but
then there seemed to be people around who knew enough custom that I thought
it better to leave it to them. That’s not an option in the medium term right
now, though.
