Please try again, and use efs-report-bug to send a bug to the EFS maintainer. Background: EFS starts up an external FTP process, and starts talking to it. If the answers it gets are not what it expects, it breaks. It's unlikely that we can come up with a sensible error message there, except to add "internal error, please report to EFS and XEmacs maintainers".
