Traversing customize menu tramples binding of mail-user-agent

Please write in English, because the XEmacs maintainers do not have translators to read other languages for them. In XEmacs 21.5 (beta1) "anise" [Lucid] (sparc-sun-solaris2.8) of Fri Jun 22 2001 on sibelius configured using `configure --prefix=/s/chopin/d/proj/meps/common/' Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug and the precise symptoms of the bug: I was trying to customize Gnus which I use for composing mail. When I went to try our my changes C-x m started mh-e instead of Gnus's message composition mode. I can reproduce this as follows start a fresh xemacs -vanilla then in *scratch* mail-user-agent => sendmail-user-agent (setq mail-user-agent 'message-user-agent) => message-user-agent mail-user-agent => message-user-agent ;; Traverse the menu ;; Options->Emacs->Advanced(customize)->Applications->Mail->Gnus ;; Bad mojo happens ;; Now mail-user-agent => mh-e-user-agent I don't think that just running around the menus should trample my mail program preferences.
