Not in menus. And if you can name a single person that has enabled them
on XEmacs for more than two weeks, I have a bridge I want to sell
him.
I had them enabled in XEmacs from October 2000 to mid-2002, when I
handed over the stable line to Vin. Then I promptly turned them off,
as I do in every application I use where I actually happen to invoke
them using my normal gestures. Now, about that bridge, I gather that
you plan to lend me the money to buy it, with the bridge itself as
collateral, is that right?
I don't know whether it would still crash Windows ports of XEmacs
hard
like it used to do when we tried supporting tooltips on XEmacs
Dunno. I got rid of all my Windows boxen in mid-2002. :-) Somebody
else is going to have to debug those bugs.
It was proof-of-concept quality then, and I don't think that
there
has been much incentive to change that, so I would rather guess
that not much has changed in that respect.
Well, a number of things have changed, but the subtle usability stuff
hasn't because nobody (including AUCTeX developers and users) has ever
bothered to follow up on the (very few) bug reports. IIRC, you
haven't tried balloon-help mode since I fixed the frame decorations,
is that right?
I agree that it's hard, though. Both Firefox and apps distributed
with Mac OS X 10.5 have a habit of leaving their tooltips on-screen
the way that dogs leave turds on the sidewalk, and they do get in the
way of the functionality I'm aiming at.
Make their default setting "on"
Probably not; they're a YAGNI AFAICS. So I'm not going to do that
until somebody shows that they have some utility. Eg, the :help
strings in python-mode menu just give slightly more verbose versions
of the information already available from the menu items. Or,
alternatively, somebody who cares enough to report and help with
fixing bugs shows up.
