problem with viper mode in tty xemacs

Folks: I couldn't send this report with "M-x report-xemacs-bug", so I'm sending it this way. If I am in viper mode, then when I try to cut or copy a line (with "dd" or "yy" VI commands), the minibuffer announces: "Symbol's value as variable is void: mouse-track-rectangle-p" I suspect that this might be partially because there is no mouse, since I'm doing this over and ssh connection, under GNU screen. Unfortunately, if I then do "M-x report-xemacs-bug", I get into a very bad state where neither "C-x" nor "M-x" work, so I cannot do anything, and I eventually have to "kill -15" my xemacs process from another screen.
