Actually, I didn't run the tests when doing that change, and it was a
plain simple braino by yours truly. Running the tests from a "make
distclean"'ed tree would have caught that too.
You're right, modulo 'make distclean' breakage, as you point out
below.

I'll make it optional. The packages tree is about 85M nowadays, which
is pretty hefty, even with CVS compression on.
Yow! I hadn't realized they were that big. You're right, that's a
chunk of bandwidth.
