also have :unscaled set somewhere in your X font path or in XEmacs.

I'm using the same init file for both builds, and I haven't done anything to
change the defaults in the installation of either the SuSE built or the home
brew.
SuSE's build has many more fonts available than does my home brew. My home
brew doesn't let me change the fonts using the menue, an that's the only way
I know how to do it.

Please do M-x report-emacs-bug in SuSE, save the buffer to a file,
then include that file in a bug report from the homebrew version.
