Progress history, yes - I agree that its not necessary, but given that it
works I am unwilling to change it myself. Note that you need to be very
careful in changing this code since you can easily break layout optimization.
Using the echo area is the Wrong Thing IMHO, I think this harks back to old
non-GUI XEmacs and is not really reflected in any modern GUI app. I would
like to see status bars implemented but I have no idea how to do this under X.
