"most of the reports" seems to imply that the effects were not just
from AUCTeX users.
The #1 area for problem reports was gnus.
If I understood this correctly, the problem in AUCTeX occured in the
context of font lock patterns, and when preparing a minimal test case.
It does not appear to me that AUCTeX would be particularly worse
affected than most other packages.
As I mentioned, it's your call.
