What is the general opinion about byte-compiling init.el? Do most

Not do it?
No.
In fact, these days I don't compile anything that doesn't either come
compiled, or demand to be compiled in order to work.
I suppose you might have some hooks that get called often enough to be
worth it, but for me, modern computers are fast enough that nothing I
regularly do in XEmacs is worth the trouble of compiling, especially
with code of mine that is permanently "under development", and so I
might want to debug at any time.
For example, I no longer bother to compile VM, though I keep a few
thousand messages in my inbox.
