There may be an XEmacs bug here, but if X crashes, X is buggy too.
Please report it to your vendor.
My guess is that this is a variant of the "TABs in redisplay crash X"
bug. I don't recall whether we had a workaround or not, but I know
that in that case it was highly recommended to patch your X server.
Almost certainly. Michael, upgrade your X server if you can; if not, for
your specific use case, try M-: (replace-string "\015" "") RET instead
of your
command.
