Yes, I have seen this before, or at least something very similar.
Try
compiling Gnus with your 21.5, then it should DTRT for both 21.5 and
21.4.
I'll try to find the details in the ding archives of what is
going
on. ATM, the only thing I can remember is that Katsumi Yamaoka
<yamaoka(a)jpl.org> knows about it. :-)
