i've never heard any actual complaints from these modem users.
typically, the
complaints only come from people who assume, like you, that other
users will

I'm a modem user ;-)
But I'm not complaining as Ben's patch looks really good.
The only thing that annoys me is that whenever I try
cvs update, CVS uploads *everything* to the server... and
because my connection is V90, upload is *much* slower than
download.
