D'oh, I should have done a little greppage myself before asking. I've been using
VM for years and have never had to do anything other than (require 'vm), which does
not actually load vm-imap. I see now that inside vm.el there are a few (require
'vm-imap)
forms, but they are all only invoked inside of certain functions which I wasn't
calling, having simply set my primary VM mailspool to an imap spec and reading mail just
using "vm-visit-folder" (not vm-visit-imap-folder). Anyhow it's all clear
now, sorry for the confusion. I also see that VM has its own mailing list, I'll take
any future VM problems there :-)
