The shadow should track the modeline background if you hit C-l. It's a bug I'd fix if I knew how to tell if the modeline face has changed. Don't know about your other questions... I haven't had to change my geometry and I still get the same size frame. But then I turn off toolbars from X resources and I believe what you're seeing might be due to changes to toolbar redisplay that Kirill (?) did. The default modeline colors have been debated heatedly, I'm not sure what the current resolution is, I set the colors from X resources. greg
