Apparently this has not been applied to XEmacs 21.5.18 yet. I
encountered problems when pasting Japanese from xpdf 3.00 [1]to XEmacs
21.5.18. Applying the above patch (slightly adapted for XEmacs
21.5.18) fixed the problem.
Probably this patch should be applied to XEmacs 21.5.x as well.
Footnotes:
[1] with SuSE patches, pasting Japanese from xpdf doesn't yet
work at all in the upstream xpdf. With the SuSE patches,
xpdf sends UTF8_STRING but not COMPOUND_TEXT.
