I use gmail on Linux (Ubuntu 9.04). That's about all I know of

I don't think Linux (or the browser) should have anything to do with
it, since the quoted-printable is still in the text sent by Gmail to
your browser. Gmail has its problems, but this is the first I've
heard of RFC 2047 issues. I'll see if I can reproduce.
