Well, color me surprised (mildly, this is X.org, after all). That
worked on Gentoo!
... Oops, doesn't work on Mac OS X. I guess that on Gentoo I just
needed to rebuild with recent headers and/or linking to recent shared
libraries.
Annoyingly enough, xev doesn't seem to catch ClientMessage events, so
I had to hack and rebuild XEmacs to make sure the ClientMessage event
was being received.
I don't yet fully understand the "unexpected SelectionNotify" notice,
but it seems to be a normal part of the Editres protocol. I think
that what happens is that the editres client always clears the
corresponding selection property on the rendezvous window as part of
protocol initialization.
At least we know that on many Linux distros editres works fine. I may
report a bug to MacPorts and/or X.org if I don't figure it out soon.
