Sometimes there is a way to unconfigure, sometimes there isn't. The
deinstall scripts won't get confused, but you may the next time you
upgrade and the Xaw3d stuff reappears on your system. Do you
have the xaw-wrappers package installed? I believe this is intended
to handle exactly this situation, by making Xaw3d the primary package
and putting Xaw itself somewhere out of the way so that xaw-only
packages can find it.
Which version of Debian are you using? I have the xaw3d packages
installed, but never have these problems, either on my "stable" system
(where I usually build XEmacs 21.2.x) or on my "unstable" system
(XEmacs 21.1.x). Do you have the xaw3d-dev package installed? (I
don't; I wonder why it builds at all.... I'll have to look more
carefully at all this.)
