single line patches, for example, the single line patch to screw up
the delete key.

Partly because noone could think of a good migration path.
Exactly. We have not figured out a way to not make it suck. If you
put it into Debian-XEmacs we will have the situation we have been
trying to avoid -- multiple highly incompatible flavors of XEmacs.
I hope we can make it work as the current situation is suboptimal, but
please reconsider your decision on this.
