Would the error message go to the tty or to a buffer (whose contents he
can't read)?
At startup, it will go to stderr, as you see in some of his later messages
where he reports a message about "cannot convert string ... to FontStruct".
Later, once you actually have at least one usable font (in XEmacs's
opinion, anyway) it will usually go to the *Warnings* buffer, IIRC, and
output to stderr is suppressed.
