pending-del and paren are wonky

I've just compiled a tip-of-hg xemacs (first time since april 2007 though, so I don't know when the breakage happened), and I don't seem to be able to get pending delete and paren highlighting to work. In particular, xemacs -q has these items grayed out (with packages up to date). Any idea what's going on? Lisp has never been my forte, and the current defvar-inside-defun is way out of my league.
