Reposting to xemacs-beta. Please do not take threads off the mailing
list into private mail unless you are really sure that's the right
thing to do. It's impolite, it cheats other readers, and it may cheat
you if someone who knows more than I do _doesn't_ see your followup.

The shell probably is recognized as a TTY, while M-x compile is not.
Most likely you are using the color-gcc script; probably it has an
option or environment variable that allows you to tell it it should
colorize even when stdout is not a TTY. You can set that environment
variable before starting XEmacs, or with `setenv'.
